Iowa wants your black walnut seeds

Iowa’s state forestry nursery wants your black walnuts. It’s part of a seedling program they offer, where Iowans can get young trees.

This year they’ll plant about two thousand bushels of walnut seeds. They will pay $5 a bushel for the nuts. When measuring at home, a bushel is equal to about two five-gallon buckets.

“We buy them whole,” said Pat Griffin, nursery manager for the Iowa DNR State Forest Nursery. “You don’t have to clean them or do anything like that. You collect them from the ground and then you can bring them here to our Ames location or we do have a couple other buying stations across the state…
