Police identify man killed on Highway 5 in Des Moines crash

DES MOINES, Iowa — Police have released the name of a man who died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 5 on foot early Sunday morning.

Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer of the Des Moines Police Department, identified 51-year-old Corey Hiatt as the person who died in the incident. The crash happened on Highway 5 at SW 9th Street around 3:30 a.m.

The preliminary investigation shows Hiatt was trying to cross Highway 5 from the north shoulder toward the center median when he was struck by a westbound vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Parizek said the driver of the vehicle, an adult male, was not injured in the crash. The investigation has ruled out driver impairment as a possible contributing factor in the incident.
