Former Kum & Go owner Kyle J. Krause says Maverik name change was unexpected

Former Kum & Go owner Kyle J. Krause says he had not expected the chain’s new owner, Maverik, to announce plans to change the name of the iconic gas station chain he and wife Sharon sold in 2023, but that the company’s leaders are “good people” and are entitled to do as they wish.

Maverik is in the process of retiring the Kum & Go name, associated with the Des Moines-based chain since 1975. Several metro stores already display the new brand.

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Maverik began rebranding Kum & Go stores almost immediately after the purchase was completed in August 2023, beginning in four western states where both chains had locations. It announced last year it would extend the new name to all remaining Kum & Go stores…
