DES MOINES, Iowa — On Wednesday, a different kind of Habitat for Humanity home build took place in Des Moines.
This was the first-ever Home Preservation for Heroes renovation event. Dozens of volunteers converged on the homes of five central Iowa veterans, helping to complete critical repairs and modifications to their existing homes.

The goal is to help needy veterans stay in their homes more independently and safely.“So, what’s special about this week is that we’ve got these five homeowners who are going to get repairs all at once this week. So all five are veterans. We’ve got the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force represented among them. And it really is just a way to kind of elevate that, lift up that work and help spread the word a little bit that we do serve veterans in this way. So, we do have repairs that we do for veterans all year round, all kinds of types of things. but this week, we’re really helping to preserve accessibility and affordability in these homes so that they can remain in the homes that they know and love,” said Danny Akright, Director of Communications for Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity.
