If you’ve ever driven on U.S. Highway 20 through the great state of Iowa, then you know it can get incredibly… Boring. There’s not much to look at, aside from the seemingly endless fields of corn.
There’s the world’s largest popcorn ball, which you can find in Sac City. Weighing in at over 9,000 pounds, it’s certainly a sight to behold, but outside of that, there’s not much else to see along the desolate Highway 20. Except for a yellow submarine?

In the seemingly endless stretch of road between the popcorn ball and Fort Dodge, a surprising, bright yellow, object comes into view. Inspired by the 1966 legendary song from the Beatles, a real-life, yellow submarine gives passers-by something to marvel at, and most likely spurs some interesting conversations along the way.
You can find the Yellow Submarine on the edge of Farmer, Brian Betten’s property at the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Harris Avenue. Betten (a lifelong Beatles fan) came up with the idea after seeing something similar while vacationing in Key West, Florida over eight years ago.
A neighbor sold him a giant propane tank for $600. Betten then painted it yellow and added a periscope, fins from an old 50’s style automobile, and a propeller from a boat that he already owned…
