From meal giveaways to porch pantries, neighbors are helping each other in Des Moines metro

DES MOINES, Iowa — In a time where government employees are left without pay and SNAP recipients are not receiving assistance, many people across the Des Moines metro are getting creative and finding ways to help their neighbors in need.

A free food giveaway at Kitchen Spaces in the Drake neighborhood and a pantry on a Waukee family’s front porch are just two examples of how central Iowans are helping each other.

Starting at 11 Monday morning, crowds of people could be seen at Kitchen Spaces waiting in line for a warm meal, including food like chicken, mac and cheese, chili, green beans, corn bread, cake, and more…
