An Ames woman was recently arrested for allegedly stealing money from a dependent adult in Greene County.
According to court documents, the Jefferson Police Department began an investigation on November 20, 2024 after being notified from the victim about money missing from their bank accounts. Court documents show that the victim told officers that a family member, who had power of attorney, was allowed to oversee paying for medical expenses, as well as from July 4th through August 26th, the family member could also use the victim’s debt card for food and gas while visiting the victim in the hospital.
During the investigation, officers found that from July 5th through October 10th, a total of $4,983 was charged from the victim’s bank accounts. The criminal complaint states that there were 16 unauthorized purchases that were under $100 and 68 that were over $100. On December 30, 2024, an arrest warrant was issued, charging 43-year-old Dawn Maiers with a Class B Felony for ongoing criminal conduct and two Class D Felonies for dependent adult abuse and unauthorized use of a credit card…
