Lane changes on I-80 begin ahead of holiday travel

DES MOINES, Iowa – It’s one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, and some changes are coming to one of the busiest interchanges in the metro.

Beginning this week, westbound traffic on I-80 from Highway 65 to the east mixmaster will be on newly paved lanes on the north side of the interstate. The middle lanes formerly used for westbound traffic will now be unused for the winter.

Eastbound traffic won’t see any changes — for now. Next year, eastbound traffic will move to the middle lanes to make way for reconstruction. The end goal is to add an extra lane between the east mixmaster and Highway 65.

While this change will mostly bring an end to construction on this stretch of I-80 for the season, other traffic projects around the metro are expected to continue well into December…
