DES MOINES, Iowa — Inside the catering kitchen tucked away in the Cash Saver off Fleur Drive in Des Moines, it will soon be all hands on deck. By Thursday morning, Angela Ramos will be serving a homemade Thanksgiving feast to an estimated 1,000 people, completely free of charge.
“We’ve got about 500 pounds of mashed potatoes,” said Ramos, who owns Hot Tamale Catering. “I have a team coming to cut and peel them for me tomorrow.”
Due to economic hardships and the lasting effects of the recent government shutdown, Ramos said she is expecting roughly 200 more people than last year.
