DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police say a teenager is recovering after he accidentally shot himself in the leg inside Broadlawns Medical Center.
At around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, the DMPD said officers responded to the hospital, located in the 1800 block of Hickman Road, on a report of a shooting.

Police say that evidence collected so far shows that the teen and his mother were at the hospital for a scheduled appointment. When the mother went to the care area, police say she left her purse, which contained a handgun, with her son. Police then say the teen grabbed the gun and accidentally fired it, which struck him in the leg.
