DES MOINES, Iowa — A national nonprofit is helping the family of fallen Des Moines firefighter, Malcolm Cortner, by paying off their mortgage.
“He was just one of those guys you dream about having on your crew. [He] really takes care of business, makes everybody else feel at ease, and working with the public, he’s just on top of his game,” said firefighter Joe Van Haalen who worked at the same station as Cortner.
Cornter was 42 when he lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. He was an advocate for the bill to improve health coverage for cancer in fire responders in the state. He died before that bill became law this year…
