DMPD Sergeant Injured After Driver Loses Control, Crashes Into Patrol Vehicle on Merle Hay Rd

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines Police Department Sergeant escaped serious injuries Sunday night after a southbound driver lost control on Merle Hay Road, crossed the centerline, and collided with a patrol SUV and another vehicle. The crash happened during an attempted pass that left three people with minor injuries.

According to DMPD, video evidence shows the driver of a Toyota Corolla attempting to pass another vehicle while heading southbound. The driver lost control, spinning into the northbound lanes and striking a DMPD patrol vehicle and a pickup truck.

The Sergeant and a passenger inside the pickup sustained minor injuries and were evaluated at the scene by medics. The Corolla driver was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
