Over 80 grams of fentanyl seized from West Des Moines man, DMPD says

DES MOINES, Iowa — A West Des Moines man has been charged after the Des Moines Police Department says a search warrant at his home turned up over 80 grams of fentanyl as well as other drugs.

According to the DMPD, following a months-long investigation, a search warrant was executed at the home of 23-year-old Darrian Phillips, located in the 200 block of 52nd Street in West Des Moines, on Monday. The DMPD said that during the search investigators found 85 grams of fentanyl, 200 Alprazolam pills, marijuana, drug scales and packaging, and $7,000 in cash.

The DEA says that fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that’s 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine. Just two milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal depending on a person’s size, tolerance, and even past usage. Between January and September 2025, the DMPD said it seized four pounds of fentanyl.

Phillips was booked into the Polk County Jail on Monday on several charges, including:

  • Controlled Substance Violation – Possession With Intent to Deliver Fentanyl
  • Two counts of Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp
  • Prohibited Acts – Prescription Drug Violation
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – Marijuana
