K-9 Zarko Takes Down Suspect After Wild Overnight Pursuit Through Des Moines

A wanted Altoona man is in custody after leading Des Moines Police on a 17-minute overnight pursuit in a stolen SUV that ended in a crash and foot chase. The suspect, 40-year-old Edward Minnis, was apprehended by K-9 Zarko shortly after fleeing the wreck near SE 14th Street early Wednesday morning.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A routine traffic stop attempt turned into a high-speed pursuit just before 3:00 a.m. when Des Moines Police Department patrol officers attempted to pull over a Hyundai Santa Fe in the 1400 block of SE 14th Street. The vehicle was displaying license plates reported stolen.

Police say the driver — 40-year-old Edward Minnis of Altoona — refused to stop, sparking a pursuit that lasted 17 minutes as he accelerated away from officers. Minnis ultimately lost control and crashed, disabling the stolen vehicle.

He fled on foot but was quickly tracked and captured by DMPD K-9 Zarko
