ANKENY, Iowa — After a year of uncertainty, an Ankeny neighborhood now knows that it won’t be a Walmart going up in their backyard but an apartment complex.
In December 2024 the owner of a property located along N Ankeny Boulevard between NW Reinhart Drive and NW 36th Street submitted an application to rezone the land from multiple family residential to commercial. Plans were also submitted that indicated Walmart looked to build their second Ankeny store on the lot.
Shortly after the city began looking into the proposal, including a traffic survey, the surrounding neighborhood spoke out against the possible development. Residents spoke at city council meetings in the spring saying the store would cause increased traffic, along with noise and light pollution…
