DES MOINES, Iowa — As part of a long-standing tradition, a celebration and candle lighting was held outside Maccabees Deli on the first night of Hanukkah. This year, the event was marked with sadness after a fatal attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Australia.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Sunday that at least 15 people were killed after a father and son open fired on a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
“What we saw yesterday was an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores in an iconic Australian location, Bondi Beach, that is associated with joy, associated with families gathering, associated with celebrations,” Prime Minister Albanese said.
