DES MOINES, Iowa — A coin worth thousands was found in a metro-area Salvation Army red kettle earlier this month.
The Salvation Army said Friday that a one-troy-ounce gold coin was found in a red kettle at the Urbandale Hy-Vee on December 9. According to the Salvation Army, appraisals value the coin at $4,000.

“Any time a gold coin is dropped into a red kettle, it’s a rare and wonderful occasion,” Major Dan Hull, the Capital Area Commander said. “Gold-coin donations provide a real boost to our seasonal fundraising campaigns, which in turn support our array of social services — so we want the donor to know how grateful we are for their outstanding generosity.”
