Salvation Army Toy Store gives away thousands of toys to families in need

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The Salvation Army Toy Store enters its last day of giving away nearly 10,000 toys to families that need them for the holidays on Thursday.

The event takes place over a three-day period, where families who applied to go to the store, located at Valley West Mall, and pick out gifts for kids ranging from newborn to 12 years old.

Ludacris donates $100,000 to Iowa’s ChildServe

Toys are donated throughout the year by individuals or from events like the Angel Tree, Teddy bear toss at an Iowa Wild game, to name a few.

“It’s been a tough time in the economy this year, and a number of families just need a little bit of assistance,” said Major Daniel Hull, Area Commander for the Salvation Army. “So, as parents come in, we want to make sure the parent is giving a toy to their child. You’ll notice none of our toys have Salvation Army or any of those are logo branded. It is important to us that the parent is giving this toy to the child, and if we can help in that small way, it is going to be great.”…
