Iowa grocery stores adjust to new SNAP guidelines

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new state law which made changes to what food items customers can purchase with EBT cards went into effect on New Years Day, and local grocery stores are now adjusting to the changes.

“I think it’s going to take lots of adjustment,” said Hardik Kalra, whose family owns Linn’s Supermarket in the Highland Park neighborhood of Des Moines. “It’s going to take adjustment on our part, but also the consumers because they’re used to coming in and try buying a bag of chips or buying candy.”

Under the new SNAP guidelines, non-taxable food items like soda, candy, and some store-prepared foods are no longer allowed to be purchased with EBT cards…
