Des Moines police release preliminary data for 2025, positive trends reflected

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released preliminary data for last year, and compared to 2024, data shows positive trends in multiple key categories.

According to the department, homicides, traffic fatalities and total police reports were all down in 2025 compared to 2024. The amount of recovered firearms was up from the year before, something DMPD also sees as beneficial.

Looking at the early stats for the past year, DMPD said Police Chief Michael McTaggart told members of the force, “This did not happen by chance – this is the result of deliberate, consistent work and a shared commitment to doing things the right way. None of our success happens without each of you.”…
