Apartment proposal in historic Valley Junction draws concerns from neighbors

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A group of Valley Junction residents is pushing back against a proposal to build modern apartments in the historic neighborhood.

It all started in 2022 with the introduction of a transition zone in Valley Junction’s master plan. The idea is that five areas around the business district will potentially include single-family and low-density housing, like apartments.

West Des Moines City Councilman Kevin Trevillyan, who represents Valley Junction, told Local 5 the council heard a proposal to create the transition zoning code at a workshop meeting on Dec. 15. It would allow three rental homes on 4th Street to be torn down and replaced with a 12-unit apartment complex…
