At Northcrest Community in Ames, a bridge stretches more than 24 feet across the Grand Room gallery. The structure isn’t made of steel or concrete, but of fabric, thread, felt, paint and imagination.
The “Bridge Project” was created by more than 20 members of the Iowa Fiber and Beyond group, which includes fiber artists mostly from central Iowa. The project is a sweeping collaborative exhibit of 24 art quilts, each depicting the iconic arches of the University Avenue Bridge in Des Moines.
The exhibit, previously shown only at the 2025 Iowa State Fair, arrived in Ames thanks to Carolyn Abbott, a Northcrest resident and member of the fiber arts group…
