Des Moines city departments begin move to new City Hall downtown

Multiple Des Moines city offices, including the city manager’s office, legal and finance departments, have begun their move to the west side of downtown.

City officials plan to move 11 departments from four different buildings to the new City Hall, the T.M. Franklin Cownie City Administration Building, 1200 Locust St. in the Western Gateway, by mid-February, according to a city news release Tuesday, Jan. 6.

The City Hall will be housed in the eastern wing of the Cownie building, formerly the Nationwide Mutual Insurance office building, which Des Moines purchased in 2023.
