As Des Moines inches closer to unveiling its latest relocated fire station on the city’s north side, neighbors say they are concerned about the new tenants who could move in to the old station about a mile southeast.
Des Moines Fire Station No. 4 is moving to a new 21,000-square-foot building on Clark Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and 19th Street. The new location will replace the current station 4 — the city’s second oldest fire station — at 917 University Ave. City officials said the new site should open in the first quarter of the year.
The city received a proposal to lease a portion of the old station, sandwiched between the King Irving and River Bend neighborhoods north of the downtown core, from Friends of the Catholic Worker.
