Single mom turns to Embrace Iowa for relief from mounting utility costs

Just because hardworking Iowans are between jobs, it doesn’t mean utility companies place their monthly bills on pause. Eryca Hamilton, a Des Moines resident and single mother of three children, was waiting for her next work opportunity when she moved into a new apartment. Accustomed to utilities bundled as an inclusive part of her regular rent, she was surprised to discover both MidAmerican Energy and Des Moines Water Works were sending out bills that surpassed her carefully budgeted monthly income.

“My mind was mostly on keeping a roof over our head,” Hamilton said.

As the fees and invoices mounted, a family member recommended Embrace Iowa as the only state-wide resource to help eligible and carefully vetted residents in similar circumstances…
