Iowa Attorney General weighs in on sheriff pay issue behind state lawsuit

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – In response to questions arising from a lawsuit, Iowa’s Attorney General says counties must use a formula that has resulted in high pay for county sheriffs and budget challenges for smaller counties.

The issue stems from the controversial Back the Blue law Iowa passed in 2021, in the wake of anti-law enforcement protests following the killing of George Floyd.

Part of the Iowa law requires county supervisors set pay for the county sheriff to be comparable to law enforcement administrators and commanders in the state patrol and police chiefs of cities of similar populations to the county. The law was meant to erase pay disparities…
