Iowa state lawmakers considering several measures to address high cancer rates

Iowa state lawmakers will decide several pieces of legislation to address Iowa’s problem with a high rate of cancer cases.

We start with Iowa’s serious problem with cancer. Statistics show 87 of Iowa’s 99 counties have rates higher than the national average. It ranks second behind Kentucky in terms of the rate of new cancer cases, not exactly the kind of thing that will attract people to move to the state.

Here are some of Gov. Kim Reynolds’ proposals to try to improve those statistics:

She proposes raising the cigarette tax by 65¢ to $2.01 a pack. The Iowa Health Initiative wants an increase of a $1.50 a pack. Reynolds also wants to impose a 15% tax on vaping…
