Fisherman reels in record-breaking black crappie in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — Instead of watching the Super Bowl earlier this month, a fisherman decided to test his luck at a southwest Iowa lake and was rewarded by reeling in a new state record fish.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced on Tuesday that the record-breaking black crappie was caught on February 8 by Micaiah Thompson. The fish measured 17.8 inches and weighed 3.95 lbs., just 0.07 lbs. heavier than the previous record set in 2013.

Thompson caught the fish at the Lake of Three Fires in Taylor County.
