Des Moines man convicted with mother in violent Ankeny home invasion

An elderly Ankeny man lost his wife one day and his sense of security the next.

A Des Moines mother and son now have both been convicted for their roles in the violent home invasion that resulted in his multiple injuries. Merrelita Kintz, 46, already has been sentenced to 35 years in prison after taking a plea deal, and on Thursday, Feb. 12, a jury convicted her son Gemiere Goodwin, 28, of robbery, burglary and willful injury.

According to prosecutors, the victim’s wife died in June 2025 after a period in which she’d received care from home health aides, one of whom was Goodwin’s sister. The next day, as the man was making calls to loved ones, Goodwin entered his home, demanded money, and attacked and choked him into unconsciousness, leaving him with head and facial injuries…
