House bill would require search warrants, limit data retention for plate readers

DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa House subcommittee advanced a bill on Wednesday that would require search warrants and limit data retention for automatic license plate readers (ALPRs).

The bill, House File 2555, establishes that only law enforcement can use automatic registration plate readers. A common camera some Iowans might hear of is Flock Safety cameras, as they are used across the state, including in communities like Des Moines, West Des Moines, and Marshalltown.
