Community pushes back on Waveland Golf Course lighting

DES MOINES, Iowa — What was supposed to be a meeting unveiling the new lighting at the Waveland Golf Course quickly grew out of control, with residents raising several concerns.

Representatives from Musco Lighting, “C” Corporation, and the City of Des Moines attempted to ease residents’ concerns about the new lighting for nine-hole night golfing.

Travis Rothmeyer felt the lighting would disrupt the historic course, “The oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River. It is a historical landmark, and to me, it’s just unbelievable that there’s even a discussion about altering it.”

Molly Berggren, a mother in the neighborhood next to the course, shared the concerns of many parents about the possible light pollution, “I think midnight is way too late to have a lighting that’s 50, 60 feet up, you know, just for our kids going to sleep.”…
