DES MOINES, Iowa — The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says it aided in rescuing 35 animals from a western Iowa home earlier this week.
The ARL of Iowa says its rescue crews, alongside authorities, arrived on the property where dogs and puppies, rabbits, and birds were found to be living in filthy conditions.
A state-certified veterinarian determined that all the animals needed to be removed for their own safety. “The floors of the home were covered in feces, and the dogs’ food was scattered on the same soiled floors,” a portion of the ARL press release read.
The ARL says its shelters remain full, and its emergency kennels were filled after a situation where 33 dogs were rescued from a Story County home. Officials say crews prepared additional overflow housing in another large room in the shelter. All 35 animals are now receiving care and any needed treatments.

Two weeks ago, the ARL of Iowa responded to a Story County Sheriff’s Office rescue request for 33 dogs that were outside, most without shelter, and chained to trees. The ARL of Iowa shared an update on the dog’s recovery, saying, “Most were very fearful when they arrived, but they’ve been making good progress working with our behavior and care teams, and it’s been heartwarming to see them open up more each day. Part of the socialization process involves daily enrichment tailored to their individual needs and preferences, including peanut butter-covered frisbees and one-on-one time with our team.”…
