i9 Investigation: Ankeny man arrested for OWI despite being sober

LUCAS CO., Iowa (KCRG) – An Ankeny man was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated on the Fourth of July despite being completely sober, an I9 Investigates report has found.

Teagen Peiffer was driving along Highway 34 in Lucas County when he was pulled over by Lucas County Sheriff’s Deputy Cole Wood for traveling 70 mph in a 55 mph zone. After a search of Peiffer’s car found nothing, Deputy Wood asked him to consent to a field sobriety test.

Failed test, zero breathalyzer

Deputy Wood’s report stated Peiffer failed the Horizontal Gaze test. When a breathalyzer returned a reading of zero, the deputy suspected Peiffer may be under the influence of a controlled substance. Peiffer was arrested on suspicion of OWI.

It took three hours for investigators to verify Peiffer was sober before he was released. After the arrest, the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office did not return him to his vehicle, leaving him stranded roughly an hour from home…
