Perry stalwart Joe Royer celebrates 90th birthday

Joe Royer celebrated his 90th birthday by treating the attendees of the Perry First United Methodist Church to pizza, cake and ice cream on Sunday.

Royer, a long time fixture in Perry, was born on March 18, 1936, at the doctor’s office in Dallas Center. His mother had to be transported to the doctor by horse and sleigh because the winter of 1935 to 1936, had one of the largest snow falls in recorded history.

Royer is a long-time supporter in the community. He owned and operated a service station in Perry with his father, Glenn “Whitie” Royer, and Joe Royer eventually worked for the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1996 after 30 years in the service…
