Warren County program hopes to intervene after juvenile crime

INDIANOLA, Iowa — The typical approach to juvenile crime has been to divert kids away from bad behavior. A new Warren County initiative is challenging that assumption.

The juvenile intervention program allows minors who commit lower offenses and/or first-time offenses to be referred to the program rather than juvenile court. That includes offenses like theft, disorderly conduct, vandalism, and even a minor assault.

Kids will meet with an advisor to set goals and work on completing them. This means involvement with community members and law enforcement. The program also works with and tries to improve family life.
