Charge upgraded to murder after victim in Des Moines assault dies

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man is now charged with first-degree murder after the victim in a February assault died from his injuries.

Sie Jones, 25, was initially charged with willful injury in the February 12 assault on 61-year-old Paul Montis, Sr., in the 600 block of 16th Street. He also faced charges for resisting arrest after officers located him. He was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer, Criminal Mischief, and Interference with Official Acts.

Monis was hospitalized in critical condition after the assault, according to Sgt. Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department.

Online court records show an attempted murder charge was filed against Jones on February 13. Sgt. Parizek said that Montis died on February 27th.

The charge against Sie was upgraded to first-degree murder on March 24th after consulting with the Polk County Attorney’s Office…
