POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about text message scams claiming to come from the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) or “DMV.”
Scammers falsely claim the recipients of the texts have unpaid traffic violations, tolls or registration fees. Iowa does not have a “DMV,” or department of motor vehicles.
The Iowa DOT does not send out fee reminders via text, nor will it ask for private or financial information via text, the sheriff’s office says. Additionally, the Iowa DOT does not collect tolls on any roads or bridges.
