Iowa man charged in alleged drowning death of 14-month-old

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — An Iowa man is facing felony charges after authorities say a 14-month-old child drowned while in his care.

According to the Marshall County Jail Inmate Roster, 24-year-old Andrew Donald Smith, of Ames, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with,

  • Child Endangerment Resulting in Death – Class B Felony
  • Abandonment of a Dependent Person – Class C Felony

A criminal complaint filed in the case states the Marshalltown Police Department was called to an apartment in the 400 block of Plaza Heights Road just before midnight on September 9, 2025, on a report of a possible drowning and unconscious child.

The complaint states the 14-month-old child was taking a bath in the residence when Smith, who was the only person monitoring the child at the time, left the child alone in the bathtub and deprived them of supervision, resulting in the child’s death.

Records state Smith is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond. Smith will appear for a preliminary hearing on April 3, according to court records…
