Des Moines man charged in cousin’s stabbing death facing competency evaluation

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man accused of stabbing his cousin to death will undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.

In early January, officers with the Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing in the 3400 block of E. 26th Street. At the time, the DMPD said that when officers arrived they came in contact with Lyhung Thach, 25, in the driveway of a residence, who told them that someone was hurt inside.

As officers searched the home, they found Peter Thach, 25, dead from multiple stab wounds.

Lyhung was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Peter’s death. According to the DMPD, the two were cousins.

Court filings show a pretrial conference and a jury trial were originally scheduled for March 26 and April 27, respectively. However, Lyhung’s defense team petitioned the court to order a competency evaluation to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial…
