Toddler nearly dies after suspected fentanyl exposure, father charged

DES MOINES, Iowa — A father is facing charges after police say his 3-year-old son nearly died after being exposed to a large amount of drugs suspected to be fentanyl.

According to court records, on February 6, Jaylin Dante Starks, 33, arrived at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines with his 3-year-old son, who appeared to be in respiratory arrest. Once there, the child was treated and received Narcan before being transferred to MercyOne for further care.

Hospital staff noted to police that the child was nearly dead when he arrived, describing him as cyanotic and not breathing…
