Meet Zak, ISU’s first-ever police K-9

AMES, Iowa — A new (and very adorable) officer just joined the Iowa State University Police Department.

Meet Zak, a 2-year-old Belgian Shepherd, and the department’s first-ever working K-9. His job? Keeping campus safe as a highly trained explosives detection dog.

Zak recently finished training in Texas with his handler, Officer Solomon Farner, and officially started duty in late March. While Zak does most of the sniffing work, Farner says teamwork is key. “He does 90% of the job—I’m there to support him,” Farner shared…
