City of Des Moines invites ideas for repurposing old Fire Station No. 4

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines’ new Fire Station No. 4 is now fully operational, and the city is seeking the community’s help to determine what’s next for the old building.

The old Fire Station No. 4, which sits at 917 University Avenue, was built in 1960. The station went offline in March after the new Station No. 4, built along MLK Jr. Parkway to better meet modern equipment and response team needs, finished construction.

In early April, the city hosted two open houses allowing residents to tour the station, learn about the redevelopment process and its possible impact, and present their ideas to officials and each other. Early reporting from the event indicates support for an assembly or entertainment space…
