DES MOINES, Iowa — Crews are working to recover after a fire sparked at Spock’s Sanctuary overnight, claiming the lives of more than 20 reptiles.

Spock’s Sanctuary, located at 2102 Milton Avenue, is a reptile and amphibian rescue center that works to educate the public, rehabilitate surrenders, and rehome reptiles into better living conditions.
Cam Reiman, co-founder and Vice President of Spock’s Sanctuary, says crews closed up around 8:30 p.m. Friday, like normal, and headed home for the night. Just before 10:30 p.m., Reiman says she received a call that their building was on fire.
Reiman, along with several staff and Des Moines Police and Fire Department personnel, arrived on scene and began rescuing the animals from the building and working to extinguish the flames.
