State News: Domestic Violence Leads to Fatal Shooting, while Community Rallies for Healing and Support

Woman Shot In Friday Downtown Des Moines Shooting Dies Saturday

(Des Moines, IA) — The woman injured during a shooting in Des Moines on Friday has died. Police say Abdul Jabbar Jackson shot the victim, Jessica Henderson, and her dog before shooting himself. Henderson was in the hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries Saturday morning. Neither the dog or suspect survived. Investigators say Jackson also tried to shoot one of Henderson’s friends. Jackson had previously been arrested for first-degree harassment after Henderson reported him, but posted bond and was released just six hours before the shooting. In a statement, Henderson’s family says domestic violence is a public safety issue and urges the community to take warning signs seriously.
