More rounds of strong storms ahead in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — Strong storms moved through Iowa last night, producing wind and hail. Rainfall totals were needed and exceeded half an inch in spots. Your weather timeline below takes you into a stormy Monday.

A boundary over southern and central Iowa will be the focus for thunderstorm development later on today. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Iowa in a slight risk of severe weather later this afternoon and this evening. The main threats would be wind and hail, but there is a small tornado risk along the boundary itself.

The image below shows surface winds (white) and winds roughly 3000′ above the ground (yellow). The change in wind direction from the ground up along the front from Omaha up toward Waterloo later this afternoon into this evening will make it the best location to look for rotating storms.

The short-range computer model below shows the evolution of the storms. Rain chances will linger into the morning hours on Sunday.

We’ll get a break from precipitation Sunday into the early evening. Sunday will be a warm and windy day, with gusts to around 40 mph. The best chance for severe weather will come at night.
