Happy birthday, Gilda Radner: A Michigan comedy pioneer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Sunday marks what would have been Gilda Radner’s 80th birthday. The Detroit native’s life was cut short when she died from ovarian cancer in 1989, but she left behind a legacy as a pioneering comedian and the face of cancer care and support.

Gilda was born June 28, 1946, to an affluent family. Her father Herman Radner managed a hotel and her mother Henrietta was a legal secretary.

Radner was particularly close with her father. They both loved music and theater and the family regularly attended traveling shows in Detroit and took trips to New York City to visit Broadway…
