Archdiocese should beware of accepting ‘change’

As you might have heard, the Archdiocese of Detroit is undergoing a “restructuring” process. Translated, that means a number of churches will have to forfeit their liturgies, even Sunday and Saturday evening services. Despite patronizing noises made by diocesan officials that these churches might be used for purposes of sacraments such as funerals and marriage ceremonies, everyone knows the doors of these churches will be closed. The very idea of a Catholic Church that doesn’t hold Mass is absurd.

Three different layouts for the churches have been issued. Some of the churches will lose their liturgies under any of the three plans laid out. These churches include my own worship venue. Yet other churches are being allowed weekend liturgies and weekday services. Of course, the priest shortage has much to do with the restructuring. But it’s hard to believe this problem couldn’t be alleviated if those churches that are allowed a full schedule would relinquish one or two liturgies per week for the sake of sister parishes condemned to close…
