A sea of black clothing, colorful flags and solemn faces moved through Dearborn, Michigan, as tens of thousands gathered for one of the largest Shia Muslim religious processions ever held in the United States.
The annual Arbaeen procession took place on Saturday, August 16, 2025, drawing worshippers and visitors from Michigan, other states and Canada. Social media posts placed attendance as high as 45,000, although the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center, which organized the march, later described the turnout as a record-breaking crowd of about 40,000. A publicly available police count confirming the higher 45,000 estimate has not been found.
Whatever the precise number, the scale was impossible to miss. The procession filled major sections of the city, turning normally busy roads into a moving memorial for Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
