Meijer is continuing to expand its smaller-format grocery stores, with a new location set to open in Livonia on August 19.

The 75,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery at 33500 Seven Mile Road will offer fresh food, pharmacy services and everyday essentials, but in about half the footprint of a traditional Meijer supercenter. The smaller format is becoming a bigger part of Meijer’s strategy in Michigan.

The Livonia location follows a 47,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery that opened in Rochester Hills in May. Meijer first began testing the concept in 2023 with stores in Macomb Township and Lake Orion. Another smaller-format store is planned for Clinton Township.

Michigan Meijer Expansion Includes New Supercenters

But Meijer isn’t abandoning its traditional supercenters. The retailer has opened several supercenters in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Here in Michigan, Meijer has proposed a new supercenter in Hastings, while a Plymouth Township supercenter is expected to open later this year.

The expansion comes as grocery stores continue to perform well despite the growth of online shopping according to Crain’s Detroit Business. Retail experts say Michigan’s increasingly competitive grocery market is pushing Meijer to find new ways to attract shoppers.
