Family identifies 45-year-old man found shot to death blocks away from Canton home after watching Lions game in Detroit

CANTON (WWJ) – Family members and friends of 45-year-old Elvin “JC” Carter are left in shock and mourning after they identified him as the man who was found fatally shot in Canton early Monday morning.

The Canton Police Department said they were called to the area of 39700 Koppernick Road, between Warren and Joy roads, around 12:45 a.m. on Jan. 29 after neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

A male’s body — identified as Elvin — was found in the roadway, just blocks away from his home.

Family members, including his 16-year-old daughter Jayla Carter who had already lost her mother years before, told WXYZ that Elvin’s death doesn’t feel real.

“I’m still in shock. He didn’t deserve this,” Jayla said.

The family said Elvin was watching the Lions NFC Championship game on at his usual hangout on Sunday at Sky Bar and Grill in Detroit. Jayla said she believed he was sleeping in after a long night, unaware of the nightmare unfolding a couple of streets away.

Elvin’s brother Eric Carter, a former Detroit police officer who now works for the force in Nashville, Tenn., said his brother was just making his way home.
